History at KS4

Year 9 History - What is taught and when

Students at Meadowhead receive two or three hours of history per week covering the 18th,19th and the 20th centuries.

Module 1 - The Industrial Revolution. Module 2 - The First World War.  Module 3 - The Second World War.

How will I be assessed?

There are regular mini assessments throughout the year that will aim to develop the skills required for a GCSE exam, these skills range from source analysis and interpretation, an in-depth understanding of Historical context, essay writing and the assessing of events and individuals.   This will develop the skills necessary for the Year 10 and 11 GCSE course outlined below.

What will I do on this course?

This intriguing and exciting course allows you to develop an understanding of some of key events of British History. You will gain an historical perspective on some of the main issues facing Britain allowing you to develop a better understanding of the nation and world you live in. You study four main topics:

  1. Medicine in Britain, c1250-present.
  2. Anglo Saxon and Norman England c1060-88.
  3. Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918-39.
  4. Superpower relations and the Cold War

How will I be assessed?

- One tier of entry

- The course is linear across KS4 – a 2 year cycle

What skills do I need?

  • To be able to investigate historical events, changes, people and issues.
  • To be able to use historical sources critically and draw conclusions.
  • To be able to read regularly to reinforce learning.
  • To be able to produce extended pieces of writing – controlled assessment.
  • To be able to develop your historical skills and knowledge.

Any other essential information?

History is a very highly regarded subject amongst employers. Many of the skills developed are transferable and there is a wide variety of jobs to which History can make a contribution. You can continue to study history Post 16 at Meadowhead to AS and A2 Level. This can be taken further to University Level. It is an extremely interesting and relevant subject – we are looking for students with a genuine passion for the subject.
