South Yorkshire Cross Country Championships - Winter Hill school, Rotherham

Meadowhead brought 6 eager athletes on the early morning coach to Rotherham all as proud representatives of the school but also their whole city! Supported as ever by Mr Adams, the half a dozen of us set out into the competition in hope that we would qualify for the national championships in Donnington on the 15th March.

Y7 girls

Amy Bottomley and Alex Gregory were the first girls to step up to the start line and be the first to be deafened by the gun. Both girls ran a fantastic race with Amy finishing 11th and Alex finishing 22nd in a very strong girl’s race.

Y7 boys

Reuben Newman-Billington was the lone runner from Meadowhead in the Y7 boys race and had to run an extra 1000 metres in his race too. But this had no effect on Reuben who finished over 5 places higher than he was expected to finish and came 2 places away from the top ten so a brilliant run from him.

Y8/9 boys

In the junior race, unfortunately, Luke Newell was forced to retire with an injury to his back and a breathing problem but well done to Luke for getting this far and I’m sure that he will bounce back for next year. The other runner was Joe Newman-Billington who ran the whole race on the eventual champion’s shoulder and finished in 2nd place to qualify for the national championships.

Y10/11 boys

Jonathan Shields ran in a very talented race and did fantastically to reach yet another national final after finishing in a comfortable 2nd place.

Overall, it was a fantastic morning of running from every athlete across South Yorkshire and all 6 runners who represented Meadowhead School were a credit to the school and the city.

Congratulations to the two runners who qualified for the national championships and good luck to the pair in Donnington.

Also a massive thank you to Mr Adams for all his organisation, encouragement and support – much appreciated by all runners!
