Sheffield Cross Country Championships

Mud. Slush. Bogs. Small children all huddled together between two poles whilst freezing to death. This could only be the Sheffield City Cross country Championships, held in Graves Park to decide who are the best runners in their city and who would be chosen to represent Sheffield in a fortnight’s time at the South Yorkshire Championships in Rotherham on February 1st.

Y7 girls

The first race of the morning saw 2 girls take to the track. Alex Gregory finished 13th; one place off qualification for the South Yorkshire championships but nonetheless a great run from her. Amy Bottomley came 9th in her race so will definitely qualify so well done to her.

Y7 boys

In the boy’s race, all 4 boys finished in the top 15 of their race and Reuben Newman-Billington qualified for the South Yorkshire Championships in 9th place. Congratulations also to Freddie Elam; Isaac Platton and Ellis Hircock who not only ran a fantastic race but also helped their team finish 3rd in the team event.

Y8/9 boys

Despite the terrible conditions, both boys did a great job in their race. Joseph Newman-Billington (Y9) finished in 4th place despite many tumbles down various hills and Luke Newell (Y8) unfortunately had a nasty slip which cost him over seven places but credit to Luke as he kept going to finish 16th.  He will be a huge contender for the title next year as he has another year of running in his age category. Both Joseph and Luke have been selected to run for Sheffield.

Y10/11 boys

Many congratulations to Jonathan Shields who tore his race apart and finished first in style to secure a very easy qualification for the South Yorkshire Championships and hopefully succeed in that to reach the national finals. Unfortunately, Joe Hibbert, who was in a clear 8th place, fell horribly on his ankle, which caused him to retire.

Overall, it was a fantastic standard of running despite the horrific weather conditions and well done to everybody who has represented the school throughout the winter.

Meadowhead, as ever, showed once again why we are such a great sporting school and congratulations to everybody who qualified to run in Rotherham for the South Yorkshire Championships; I will see you there!

Also a massive thank you to Mr Adams for all his organization, encouragement and support – much appreciated by all runners!
