Y9 vs Newfield (Sheffield Cup)

On a horribly blistery Wednesday evening and with the hailstones lashing into our faces, the Meadowhead Y9’s made their way to Newfield school in attempt to overcome their derby rivals and progress into the next round of the South Yorkshire Cup. Due to the awful weather and slippy AstroTurf, we struggled to keep the ball under control and for the majority of the first half, few chances were created other than two efforts which Ethan Holloway both put agonisingly wide.

The breakthrough came from a corner occurring five minutes before the end of the first half. After having his first delivery cleared away, Ehsan Mohammed whipped a perfect ball into the area for Louis Hutchinson to convert left-footed at the back post. And seconds later, we bagged another goal when Harry Grimmer burst through the Newfield defence, and although his shot was well saved, Louis Hutchinson followed in for the rebound to double the away team’s advantage.

In the second half, it was much of the same from both teams: Meadowhead in control in all areas of the pitch but unable to grab another goal courtesy to the atrocious wind and rain. The best chance of the second half fell to Harry Grimmer when Louis Hutchinson squeezed a ball through to Ehsan who then put the ball on a plate for Harry but his shot went just wide. Late on, Ted Claxton pulled off two fantastic saves but it was a routine victory for Meadowhead School to finish Christmas with a 100% winning record.
