BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport

Equivalent to ONE A Level taught over TWO years. Campus: Meadowhead
(as part of a full time A level programme).

Minimum entry requirements: 5 GCSEs at C. Must include English Language C and PE at B or a Merit in BTEC Level 2 Sport/GCSE.

About the course
On this Sport course students will cover a wide range of units including; The Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, The Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Practical Team Sports, Sports Nutrition and Sports Coaching. The lessons will be a mixture of practical and theory, and students will be given the opportunity to organise sports events and coach/lead younger students.
This course is equivalent to one A level taught over two years as part of a full time A level programme.

Will the course suit the student?
The ideal student would take an interest in sport as a whole subject. They should enjoy practical lessons and be prepared to analyse their own and others’ ability. Students should want to learn about how the body reacts to exercise and the different body systems involved when developing fitness and training. Students will develop an understanding of how to coach and lead sessions and should be prepared to become a role model within the P.E. department, helping to run extra-curricular activities and clubs.

Personal Study Time
BTEC Level 3 students are expected to devote as much time outside the classroom to their studies as in lessons. Students will be given significant amounts of homework on a regular weekly basis. The nature of this work will depend on the topic being studied but will always be given in order to reinforce the work covered in class and will often form the basis of assignment work.

Career Progression: The course aims to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitude essential for career development in sport specific employment. There is also an opportunity to study towards nationally recognised coaching qualifications.

Progression to higher course(s): Successful students are eligible to apply for a variety of Higher Education courses including Foundation Degrees, HNDs and BSc (Hons) courses at College.
