Art at KS3

Below are the 2 main areas that show the work students do in Art & Design.

Students can EXPLORE & CREATE Art. This means that they are able to:

1. Work on different creative ideas.
2. Use different materials and techniques.
3. Choose the best way to express themselves imaginatively.
4. Draw in different ways.
5. Use a sketchbook.

To see how well Students can EXPLORE and CREATE we can look at these abilities in more detail through Students CREATIVITY and PRACTICAL SKILLS.

Students can UNDERSTAND & EVALUATE Art. This means that they are able to:

1. Research, investigate and respond to types of Art and Design by a variety of makers.
2. Understand about creative works from different times and places.
3. Use advice and their own ideas to improve their work.
4. Be able to write about and discuss their own artwork and other artwork.
5. Organise, present and review their work.

To see how well Students can UNDERSTAND and EVALUATE we can look at these abilities in more detail through their CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING and CRITICAL SKILLS.

Year 7

Students will have one art lesson for one hour every week. Students will be taught in a form group with one teacher taking Students all year.

Students will improve and develop their art skills by working in 3 units. The units focus on 3 main areas of art and design. They are Draw! Paint! and Sculpt! The general theme for the year is ‘The Material World’ – objects, environments, places non living things would be a simple way to think about it.

Students will all have a sketch book to do school art work in. Students must not use it for anything else or tear pages out to use. It is free but if Students lose it Students will have to buy a replacement.

Year 8

In Year 8, students will be already starting to think about doing an art subject at GCSE. It is never to early to do this!

We hope Students will really enjoy the creative and imaginative challenges that come in art. There are opportunities to come and work in the art studios after school.

Students will have one art lesson for one hour every week. Students will be taught in a form group with one teacher taking students all year.

Students will be working on developing art work with more skill and depth. They will do this by following the overall year theme of ‘The Living World’. It means that they will do at least two topics related to that theme. For example, “Sea life” and “Bird life” or “The Human Form” and “Animal Life”. Their teacher will choose the topics for their group. The aim is to develop a portfolio of work (a collection of art pieces exploring different ideas and techniques) on the topics, which show how they have progressed through the year in art.

Assessment

In Y7 and Y8, students will be given regular awards for good work. and will be given feed back on how well they have done. At the end of each unit students will be given a level of attainment.
