Y9 South Yorkshire Cup Final

Following on from the upset of defeat in the Sheffield Cup Final, Meadowhead went into their third successive South Yorkshire Cup Final to play against their third consecutive opposition in the form of Ecclesfield School, who won the last two meetings between the two teams on penalties. Meadowhead were all fired up for the game, but less than a minute into the match, the Ecclesfield forward caught Ted Claxton off his line and performed an exquisite lob over his head to put Ecclesfield in front.

From then on, Meadowhead were undoubtedly the better team. Ehsan Mohammed’s long throws were causing havoc in the Ecclesfield penalty area but, for once, we just weren’t able to apply a final touch. With the end of the first half approaching, Jack Morton hit the cross bar with a powerful header for the second final in a row and he also came close with a blast from the edge of the box which was too hot to handle for their keeper but nobody was following in for the rebound. Ironically, Meadowhead’s best chance of the game came when a corner was whipped right across the face of goal in the last minute of the game, and it missed four players’ toes each by a couple of inches. Seconds later, Ecclesfield smashed the ball up field for the strikers to run on to and eventually score the goal which, completely against the run of play, put the game beyond doubt. Despite the loss, Mr Allen was proud of every player and we can look back on the season (which is now finished) with our heads held high.
