Y9 vs Ecclesfield National Cup Last 32

On the second Monday back to school, Meadowhead Y9’s travelled to Ecclesfield School hoping to reach the Last 16 of the National Cup. The game started quite slowly but Meadowhead were clearly the side who looked most dangerous and it was Harry Grimmer who put us 1-0 up just before half time when he controlled the ball magnificently off his chest and burst through the defence to power under the goalkeeper.

Meadowhead used the momentum as they went into the second half; they bagged another goal when Ehsan Mohammed chipped the ball over the top for Harry Grimmer to prod into the top corner. From then on, it looked comfortable for Meadowhead who, immediately after, hit the post and had a shot cleared off the line, but the home side pulled a goal back through an excellently guided left-footed rebound into the bottom corner. After that, it seemed that Meadowhead were going through until a controversial free kick was whipped dangerously into the box and eventually hit the net after a goal-line scramble.

With the two sides locked, it went into extra time and it was Ecclesfield who drew first blood with an intended cross becoming a wonder goal from an almost impossible angle. Ecclesfield looked to have won. But then in the final minute, a loose ball fell to Harry Grimmer who fired in for the hat-trick and Man Of The Match Award and take the match to a repeat of the 2013 South Yorkshire Cup Final: a dreaded Penalty Shootout.

Although we lost last time, Meadowhead wanted revenge and it was just bad luck in the end because, despite Ted Claxton pulling off two terrific saves, it wasn’t enough to send us into the Last 16. However, it was a fantastic performance by the Meadowhead Y9’s and we will bounce back for next year.

Man of the Match: Harry Grimmer - for a great work rate and he displayed fantastic tactical awareness and skill when he scored a hat-trick.
