Y9 vs Penistone South Yorkshire Cup

In the opening round of the South Yorkshire Cup, it was a repeat of the semi-finals for the past two years (both times, Meadowhead prevailed) so we knew we would have a match on our hands especially with the absence of three key forwards.

We were up against it from the start and took a while to get out of the blocks but after absorbing some strong pressure, we produced some of our own, scoring three goals in ten minutes, all of which were assisted by Harry Grimmer: a cut back to Ben Hulton; a tap-in for Louis Hutchinson and an own goal which the six-foot defender could do nothing about.

In the second half, it was obvious that the Penistone manager had given his players a telling off as they came out all guns blazing in the second half and beat Ted Claxton with an unstoppable drive into the bottom right corner. But then Meadowhead responded. Fraser Russell headed in Max Fisher’s corner to reveal his t-shirt underneath reading “Why Always Me?” and Louis Hutchinson converted another easy chance following yet another assist from Harry Grimmer.

After a goal line scrap, Penistone did pull back - a very small consolation as Meadowhead breezed into the quarter finals in attempt to go one better than the 2nd place which they achieved last year after a heartbreaking penalty shootout.
