Sheffield Schools Cross Country Championships

On a frosty Saturday morning, over one hundred athletes took part in the Sheffield Schools Cross Country Championships held at Graves Park on Saturday 17th January. attempting to be crowned as champion of the city and also to qualify to represent the city at the South Yorkshire Championships, which would be held three weeks later and also at Graves Park.

Y7 Boys: Despite having three successful runners who had competed in every league meeting, it was just George Janes who ran the 2000 metres, finishing 30th. Jonathan Brocks finished 7th in the league standings but illness cast him out of the city championships.

Y8/9 Boys: After finishing 2nd in the league, Luke Newell was determined to get a medal in the championships, and although he was fourth after the first lap, Luke burst away in the second lap and did fantastically well to earn second place. Reuben Newman-Billington was the next runner back, finishing in 19th place, along with Freddie Elam and James Blake, who are all both still Y8 so will have another year to improve on their top 30 finishes. All four boys showed great determination and were excellent representatives of the school.

Y10/11 Boys: I was the lone runner from Meadowhead in this race and after six tough kilometres, managed to finish in 2nd place, ensuring that I will represent the city in the South Yorkshire Championships.

Y12/13 Boys: Jonathan Shields endured 7km of hills, woodland, bogs and streams to finish in 2nd place after a very high standard race. Jonathan also finished 7th in the league standings.

Overall, it was a fantastic morning of running from every athlete who represented Meadowhead School, and they have all shown great commitment by turning up each Saturday morning in all weathers and giving 100% every time. Three athletes (Luke Newell, Jonathan Shields and Joe Newman-Billington) have secured qualification for the South Yorkshire finals and there is a strong possibility that Jonathan Brocks and maybe Reuben Newman-Billington may join them. Hopefully the other runners will be able to make the Sheffield team next year too.

Also a massive thank you to Brian Adams for all his organisation, encouragement and support – much appreciated by all runners!
