Chromatography Experiment - Y7s

Y7s enjoyed learning about Chromatography - the processes for separating dissolved solids - and as part of their remote learning science lesson they were given the opportunity for a practical experiment.

Using kitchen or toilet paper, they were asked to determine the colours present in the inks of biros/felt pens. You too can have a go by following these instructions:

Meadowhead Bake Off - week 2

It was great to see so many students baking along with us live on @meadowheadADT Instagram for our second bake off on Monday 8th February - we were also sent lots of photos of your efforts, and you can see some below.

While everyone waited for their dough to rise, there was a quiz about the ingredients and method so far - we were impressed with how well everyone had listened!

Y7 students took a break from their screens in their online science lesson to use any resources at home to create models of elements, compounds and mixtures - a great way to demonstrate their understanding of the difference between them.

Y7 'Show and Tell' Form Time

Some of our Y7 Form Tutors have been doing a 'show and tell' with their students in the morning - encouraging them to share something that they have been doing during this lockdown. There have been lots of positive stories - and we are delighted to be sharing some of them here.

Comforting Cottage Pie

The task for our KS3 students in the week ending 22nd January was to cook a cottage pie. Well done to all students who had a go and we are delighted to be sharing some of the photos here. There is also a fantastic step-by-step record by one of our Y8 students.

Last week's task (w/e 15th January) for KS3 food tech students was to create a one pot chilli or vegetable rice dish and we had some delicious looking photographs sent to us!

KS3 were asked to bake shortbread at home for their first food technology task in the January 2021 lockdown - as you can see here, we have some very talented bakers and we are sure they taste as good as they look!

Virtual Sports Day Results 2020

Lockdown Logos for our Virtual Sports Day

In previous years, each form has designed a banner based on a country around the world and carried it to the sports field at the start of Sports Day. Whilst we couldn't do that this year, we still wanted a creative challenge and this year it was to design a Lockdown Logo - students were asked to think about what lockdown means to them and get creative with the images that came into their heads.

Lockdown Haikus

The children of key workers who have been regularly attending school have written these excellent Haikus. A Haiku is a short form of poetry consisting of 3 short lines that do not rhyme. They were originally from Japan and often evoke images of the natural world - a great inspiration to capture how our students are feeling during lockdown.

With all that’s happening in the world and in the news at the minute we wanted to give our staff and students the chance to 'have your say'. Inspired by the artist Gillian Wearing we asked them to write a word, statement or phrase and get a photo of them holding it.

Sheffield Virtual School Games - the results are in!

Power and Conflict - Y10 Creative Response Competition

Last week (15^th – 19^th June) the English team ran a competition for Y10 based on the Power and Conflict poetry that they are currently studying for GCSE English Literature.

Our Y7s were set the task of researching the work of architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and to then choose elements of his themes to create their own piece. As you can see, we have some very talented Y7s!

International Make Music Day 2020

As part of Make Music Day 2020 on Sunday 21st June, ABRSM (one of the music exam boards) put together a virtual orchestra with musicians from all ages around the world. One of our students, Eddie 9F, got involved and played the piano part! You can see their online performance of the Disney song 'How Far I'll Go' on YouTube.

A Midsummer Night's Dream- Y7 Creative Responses

Last week (8th - 12th June) the English team ran a competition for Y7 students based on the Shakespeare play we have been studying, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Thank you so much to everyone who entered - what a fantastic effort from the year group!

We were so overwhelmed by the standard of entries that we have decided to appoint seven winners who will receive an R3, and five runners up who will receive an R2.

Our KS3 students were set a challenge in Technology to design and create Monsters. We hope to share lots of these finished projects with you, but meanwhile we were especially impressed with these two projects from Ariana and Sophie.

This challenge set by our MeadowheadArt Instagram was to recreate a famous portrait painting. Staff, students and their families were encouraged to have fun and be creative - and we have certainly had some very clever recreations of the originals. Students in Year 8 have been completing a History unit on "Should we be proud of the British Empire?" In this unit, students have looked at the positive and negative impacts of colonialism on a range of countries in the British Empire. For their final creative challenge, students were asked to write a new song about the British Empire.

R3 and R4 Awards

So many of our students are doing great work all the time and we like to acknowledge this with our reward system - R1s and R2s are issued by teachers via Class Charts. For extra special effort and achievement students are awarded an R3 or R4.

The PE department have set a fitness challenge! We were due to take over 100 students to Madrid for a football trip this year - due to the coronavirus this has sadly not gone ahead, but instead we are having a race between staff and students to get there first!

Languages Project week

Last week, KS3 languages students had the opportunity to explore some project-style tasks. The options were either to compare songs translated badly through Google Translate Sings or to bake/cook a dish from a French/German/Spanish-speaking country. We were extremely impressed with the ideas and quality of the work completed and we hope that the food has taught families a little about some delicious foreign cuisine. Here is a selection of the tasty treats and some funny song translations!

Y8 student raises £100 for the British Legion

As students continue to share their VE Day celebration stories, we would like to say 'very well done' to Alice in Y8 who brightened up her road with red, white and blue ribbons round the trees, decorations and bunting.

Alice says it was a very good street party, and she raised £100 for the British legion with games, bingo and a collection. They also had someone playing 'God Save the Queen' on the cornet, a singer singing 'We’ll Meet Again', a Morse code challenge and a quiz. It sounds wonderful!

Wartime Scones, Bunting and Stories from VE Day 8th May 2020

Technology Challenge Week 3

There was an Italian flavour to this week's challenge, with Pizzas for Y7, Lasagne for Y8 and Flatbread Pizzas for Y9. It was slightly different for Y10s, who had a go at making fish pie. Another week of some excellent cooking!

We are delighted to share this photo of the entrance to the Critical care ward at Sheffield Hallamshire hospital, which displays some of the fantastic artwork produced by Meadowhead and other school children across the city.

The hospital staff were really happy to receive and display the work received so far, and sent this message to you all “Thank you to the children of Meadowhead School for sending some sunshine our way!”

Y8 Newsletter - week ending 8th May 2020

We have had more positive news come through within the last few weeks and all of the staff at Meadowhead really appreciate the feedback, especially the teaching staff who are working endlessly to ensure that the students are accessing their learning. Parents/Guardians are continuing to email through their appreciation for all of the hard-work being put into the student’s learning and the support being provided from afar.

Me and My Pet Art Project
