Science at KS3

Students in year 7 and 8 do Key Stage 3 Science.

Students will study a variety of topics within Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

The topics relate to the AQA KS3 Curriculum. The specification can be found here:

http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/science/specifications/AQA-SCIENCE-KS3-SYLLABUS.PDF

There will be 3 main assessments throughout each year where they will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of the science concepts taught.

The assessments are graded from 1 (the lowest grade) to 9 (the very best).

These are the topics studied in Year 7 and Year 8.

Year 7

Biology:

  • Movement
  • Cells
  • Interdependence
  • Plant reproduction
  • Respiration
  • Variation
  • Human reproduction

  • Particle model
  • Separating mixtures
  • Metals and non-metals
  • Acids and alkalis
  • Earth structure
  • Universe

Physics:

  • Speed

  • Current
  • Contact forces
  • Pressure
  • Electromagnets
  • Magnetism
  • Work
  • Heating and cooling
  • Wave effects
  • Wave properties

Science lessons include practical work and encourage students to develop their scientific enquiry skills. Students are also encouraged to apply their knowledge to new situations to secure a more in depth understanding, of the Science content being taught. Students are encouraged to read around the subject outside of class and to be aware of current scientific developments, New Scientist website /magazine is a good place to start.

The course is designed to prepare students for further study of Science. It aims to give them a good foundation of knowledge and an awareness of scientific process and investigative skills to allow them to succeed at GCSE.
