GCSE Linear Course (September 2018)

What will I do on this course?

The importance of mathematics cannot be underestimated. From calculating the correct change needed when shopping, or deciding how long until the next bus, to being able to pursue a degree or higher qualification in a number of subjects, you will need to be able to work confidently with numbers. All college courses now require a good grade in GCSE mathematics or for students to sit/resit a maths qualification alongside their main subjects. We aim to give you the best possible chance to succeed by making the subject accessible and relevant for you as an individual, whatever your mathematical ability.

You will all study towards one good Mathematics GCSE. Our top ability students may also study A Level bridging content so that they are ready to step up to join our successful sixth form provision.  You will have 3 lessons a week of Mathematics in Year 9 and 4 lessons a week in Year 10 & 11.

How will I be assessed?

Currently all students follow the Higher or Foundation Mathematics Linear course, which means that you will be assessed with 3 exam papers; Two calculator papers and a non-calculator paper, at the end of your course.

Students will be set at the end of Year 8 and an appropriate tier of entry will be chosen for their group.  While there is less flexibility in set changes once Year 9 begins, changes can still occur. We will also continue with the principle that we teach students to as high a degree of understanding as possible. In this way our students will do well no matter what the examination looks like.

It is important that you work hard to get in to the highest group that you can, as this will determine how near to the top Grades you will get at the end of Year 11. All students will be expected to take their exams at the end of course

GCSE Mathematics has no coursework or controlled assessment component.

What skills do I need?

  • Good knowledge of number bonds and multiplication tables
  • At times the ability to follow instructions carefully
  • To be able to ‘think’ for yourself, and to think logically
  • The ability to be organised and take responsibility for your learning.

Any other essential information?

The first year of GCSE Mathematics is vitally important if students are to reach their potential. Year 9 covers all the essential skills for the course so it is vital that you prepare fully for the termly tests and for your Year 9 exams. Students who balance work on controlled assessments and exams in other subjects with a constant focus on mathematics are most successful.
